And as the year draws down…

Here I sit, at our family place in Nelson Bay, thankfully feeling better (but hardly perfect), and planning our night’s activities, and thinking about the year that was. Only about five hours left in the year, and it’s certainly been a varied one.

Really don’t go for all that “year that was” stuff, so there’s really only two things I want to mentioned here. I wrote a bit over 450 blog posts this year — at least one for every single calendar day this year. That’s more than twice as many as I’d written in the entire 6 and a half years of the blog prior to that, and I’m really pleased with my efforts. Obviously they’re not all gold entries, but I’m more interested in the regular effort and the regular committment to keeping this going, something I haven’t been on top of enough in previous years. So top marks there, and here’s to another year of full-on blogging!

Until November, I thought it was going to be another dud year for my fiction writing. Then a couple of things happened. We finally sorted some finances out enough to get ourselves new laptops — I got an eeePC 1000 — and I entered the NanoWriMo competition. Incidentally, I didn’t actually pass that, writing 26,000 words in November, but then I wrote another 20,000 words in December. I’m at 46,000 words as of now, this month’s effort slightly curtailed by Christmas activities and the illness of the last few days. But still — 46000 words of fiction written in two months. I expect to finish this novel draft in January, and even if this one doesn’ t work, I’ll go straight on to a new one. This sort of word count seems amazing, and it’s more fiction than I’ve written in the previous 2-3 years. It should be mentioned that the laptop brought new productivity, via reclaiming my time spent of the train every day. I get upwards of two hours every week day on the train, which with my laptop means at least 1000 words every week day. Of course, it seems harder to write anywhere else, but I’ll take what I can get.

So those are my two great activity triumphs this year. Regular day job stuff has been way more mixed, to the point that I hardly even want to mention it. And for 2009, that’s either going to get much better or much worse very quickly. But that’s the way of the world I gues, especially as is being forcast for 2009. Would rather not concentrate on that!

So, if I don’t post here again until the new year, Happy New Year to all, be safe, have fun, treat those close to you well, and enjoy yourself. First up for the year will be blog highlights, New Year’s Resolutions and a look at TV highlights for the coming year.

Possibly even worse today…

Published by Steve under family, health, holidays

Do not want to go into details, but needless to say, not very well at all today either. Laid low most of the morning, went out for some lunch, which I thought was light, but apparently it was all wrong because it came right back a few hours later.

So, more sleep, more panadol and such things, and then more sleep. Hopefully I’ll be better for New Year’s Eve.

Of all times to…

Published by Steve under family, health, holidays

Come down with a cold or flu or something. The morning was good, with more beach action and some long walking, but in the afternoon I just slept, and slept. Absolutely poured rain at about 3pm, but after that I only got worse.

Will not elaborate; this  is a time of year I’d much rather be well!

Summer days…

When words don’t really do enough:

And believe me, that was the best pose we could get :) I mean, it’s not like you want to stop for pictures when you’re at the beach anyway… when you’re four or two, that is.

Truly mobile now

Published by Steve under internet, review, tech

Anyone who’s read this before might just be wondering how on earth I’m happily blogging away while being at Nelson Bay, in a house I can proudly say has never had a phone connection (why pay month when it’s only occupied a few months a year in total?)

And the answer of course is that we’ve joined the wireless Internet age. Just before Christmas, we picked up an Optus pre-paid wireless Internet USB thing. So now with the eeePC brilliance, we can be online anywhere (that a mobile phone works, of course). And pre-paid is best, because it’s a service I can neither afford or want to pay for, or want to use, every month, but when we’re away on a trip, or have some other event or work, I can be online easily. Like two weeks away, now even better with web news, fun and blogging.

Connection speed is pretty good, and setup was surprisingly easy. Was especially impressed with the lack of install discs (considering my eeePC has no CD drive!) — all software is installed straight off the USB key, which was handy and unexpected. Once that’s setup, it’s easy, and it reminds me slightly of using an old dial up modem, except it’s much faster… barely any different from my home cable (Optus really need to upgrade their cable speed).

Well, glad to have this service, will even do some work with it at various points (especially to get the all important tax deduction!). Should have some good uses.

Boxing Day

Published by Steve under family, food, games, holidays

There’s a lot of stories about what Boxing Day is supposed to be, but in my time it’s just a day of rest — relaxation, fun, family time. We’re at Nelson Bay now, and today we started really early. Will and Alex both act a little wacky at first; probably something about the different routine from being on holidays.

But an early start is a good thing, and we get ourselves away to the beach quite soon. It’s Dutchies Beach for now, a small inner bay beach that’s perfect for kids. Quuite warm, but we’re there just after 9am, so it’s still early. But it’s crowded anyway, and will only be moreso later in the week.

Beach fun for us consists of a few major activities right now. Will and Alex both potter around the edge, taking tentative steps into the water. It’s kind of cold still, so even I was tentative a little. Will likes to dodge the waves, and Alex likes to run away… constantly! You spend most of the time at the beach chasing him around… but it’s all in good fun. Will was more confident in the water than the last time we were here, earlier this year, which was good to see. He seemed keen to jump in deeper and generally do a lot more. Last summer he barely wanted to get in the water.

So we only last about an hour and a half at the beach… eventually it’s too hot, and Will is pretty tired after the last day and little sleep, and Alex just wants to escape one time too many… so we depart, head back home and generally it’s relaxation central. As it should be. I get into some more Guitar Hero playing, including my so-far personal favourite with “Spiderwebs” by No Doubt. Really rocks out :)

Had a short afternoon shopping trip, which was notable largely for messy icecreams and a fun jumping castle. Will went to sleep quite early after essentially hitting the wall from two days of festiveness and about half the sleep he should have had (not to mention little food). I played with Alex for a while, which is always fun — he’s so close to talking, but not quite there yet.

A quiet night, too late as usual… watch this “Tin Man” minseries — really only because of Zooey, but it was interesting anyway. Some fun moments. And the day seems to end with me watching some sickening but sadly compelling footage from a Tsunami doco… it’s four years since that awful event. Hmmm…. won’t watch it all, that’s for sure… too late anyway.

Christmas cheer

Published by Steve under australia, family, food, holidays

After truly hideous weather yesterday, we woke up today and it was warm, sunny and only got better during the rest of the day. Really nice Christmas this year, with Will more exciited than ever before about the whole event, and we certainly made sure all wishes were fulfilled.

Will only wanted one thing this year… and as arranged, the Pixar Short Films Collection is finally his. Not to mention several more videos (Happy Feet, Lazy Town), various clothes, more Cars figurines, outdoor tennis and golf toy sets and so much more. For Alex  it’s not quite the same, but he’s a happy little guy and he enjoyed the day as well. His main present was a big metail Tonka truck, a solidly traditional toy that so sums up his personality. More videos, clothes and other books, and we’ve got a house full of new toys. It’s amazing how much you can get if you start enough in advance.

Wonderful highlights was seeing Will be so generous — when he went into Alex’s present bag he then started giving Alex his presents! Will’s really embraced the season… lots of “Merry Christmas” and hugging and it’s just so cute…!

We packed a ridiculous amount into today… spent the morning from eaarly hours with the boys opening presents, then the morning packing to travel, then lunch and the afternoon with the parents, with more presents and festivities. Then we packed up our already thoroughly full car and headed up to Nelson Bay at 6.30pm. Good thing it’s such a good trip now and we made it just on nightfall, just before 9pm.

Quick recovery… and some time on my highlight present — I finally have Guitar Hero! My lovely wife got me Guitar Hero: World Tour, just the guitar pack, but that’s all that made sense for now. Great stuff, already tried a few songs. Personal present highlight on a wonderful family day!
