Happy new year… in the broadest sense

It shouldn’t be controversial saying happy new year on January 1, and for most of us it is a happy new year, a time to start refresh, to think about new projects or renewed efforts on existing projects. But you just have to read the news and see how much of the country is on fire and how many problems there are and how many people are having a terrible time of things right now.

But I remind myself that someone is always having a terrible time somewhere in the world and that’s really not a way to live your life, and you have to find the good and all that, and make the best of things for yourself and the people around you.

Even then, just… the heat. We’re at that time of the year when the entirety of the day seems to be up between 38 and 42 degrees Celsius all day, and it just doesn’t make things work for anything. You feel tired, you feel drained, and though it’s supposed to be a week off from any real work, it feels like you can’t get a damn thing done anyway. I’ve even resorted to my boxing exercise at 9-10pm at night, just for some kind of respite, but even then its 30 degrees or more still.

So I end up doing loads of things at 11 o’clock at night. Like working on the Dark Sky Awakens Festival website, or my renewed attempts at blogging here, or some writing revision. I know a lot of other people will go to bed early and get to work at 6am on whatever they should be doing… but somehow… that just doesn’t work in this house…

A new year. It brings new possibilities, new opportunities, occasionally new problems. But you do what you can, when you can.
