Hieronymous Bosch action figures
Now these I could buy… figures based on the various surreal images from Bosch’s famous “Garden Of Earthly Delights” triptych artwork. Tripping and dark art that was centuries before it’s time.
I’ve known about this piece since I was under 10 years old – there was a copy of the work in a book on science fiction I owned. Very freaky, but interesting stuff for a 10-year-old, that’s for sure!

Why America is doomed, part 6758:
Mexican People Smuggler Admits Boston Terror Hoax
” Baja California state prosecutors said the tip was made by People trafficker Jose Ernesto Beltran, who called a law enforcement agency in California while high on drink and drugs to warn that a group of Chinese migrants planned to launch an attack.”
When a drunk and high people smuggler can send one crap warning and put the whole country on “terror alert”, you know the fear is killing them more than any real threat ever will…

Australian of the Year
Thank bloody goodness that we didn’t have another sports person this year. Or an actor for that matter.
I’ve always thought that awarding an already famous and usually wealthy person is against the point of the award. You give it to someone who’s been toiling at something amazing in obscurity, and the recognition shines light on their valuable work.
Looks like the winners actually fit the bill this year.

IMDB – Oscar Nominations Released
The Oscar nominations came out overnight… as expected, The Aviator leads the pack, followed by Million Dollar Baby and Finding Neverland, with Ray doing better than expected (ie: more than just Jamie Foxx.)
Good to see The Incredibles nominated for quite a few, including the expected Best Animated Feature, and the more surprising but deserved Best Original Screenplay. That category has John Logan as favourite for The Aviator, but really, isn’t it about time Charlie Kaufman won it (along with Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth), this time for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ?
Australia has fairly poor representation this year, with only Cate Blanchett in Supporting Actress for The Aviator, and Sejong Park and Andrew Gregory for Best Animated Short Film for Birthday Boy that I noticed. A good score you’d think, but we’re used to getting more now

San Francisco May Charge for Grocery Bags
As always, these things always sound more complicated in America…
Some shops in Australia already do this, and no one really minds. If you go to Aldi they charge for bags, but they’re really good ones. And since we possibly just give a shit more, there’s been an enormous drive to recycle bags, or buy $1 canvas-style bags, which carry a lot more and are infinitely more reusable.
Wouldn’t worry me at all (or most of Australia I suspect), if we were charged for plastic bags everywhere. It would just make me remember to bring my other bags more often
But I do enjoy this part: “While the goal is reducing plastic bag pollution, paper was added so as not to discriminate…”
Of course…

I’m trying out a new site feature… if you look down a little in the left hand column you’ll see a row of my pictures, including Will, Sallie and some friends of ours. It’s part of the Flickr online photo system, something I found Warren Ellis using, and it looks like a good way to both upload, order and display your photos to the rest of the world.
And since I know I’ve been woeful at updating the photo page, if this works well I think that will all become a Flickr setup. First test down there today looks good, just not sure if I’ll leave it on the homepage here or put it on the Photography page.

How to warn an American:

At the edge of the snowfields near Park City, Utah, where they’re holding the Sundance Film Festival. Still not enough apparently though. Five people went missing in the area, with at least one found dead and the others presumed to be…
