Which is what my son called it today. Which is kind of funny, but given that it is the night before Australia Day of course, I’m not surprised he picked up on that.
I’m fairly conflicted about Australia Day. I’m not entirely against it, and do appreciate a national day, but I despise the bogan hell it becomes for too many people, and the unpleasantness of most overt nationalism. And of course, what it represents for indigenous people.
Our national day really should be January 1st — that’s the day we truly became an independent nation (1/1/1901). But maybe there’s something inbetween that would be better.
I wonder what day we’ll become a Republic?
