Quiet time

Published by SteveT under family,goals,writing

The trick to keeping your kids in order is to work out how much, and when, they need to sleep.

I’ve found this with Will and Alex, but Will especially, because he tells me what the deal is… when he’s tired, when he’s tired, when he’s hungry and so on. And he’s such a good kid when he’s had enough sleep… and too often he’s a total demon when he’s really tired…

But it doesn’t seem so bad when you understand that is *why* he’s been such a little #$%#. If you know he’s really tired, you understand his behaviour. Of course, I still want it to stop…! We work to change his attitude even at that point, but at least you understand.

As it happens, a lot of Will’s problem right now comes from him not telling us what he needs. I don’t know if it’s that he doesn’t know either, or he’s trying to be so self-sufficient it’s crazy, but he needs to tell us more when he has to go to the toilet, or needs a sleep, or other things like that. He can do much of what’s required now, sometimes with help, but he needs to tell us more.

We have a lot of parenting challenges, more than most, but things are going pretty well, really. And the more time I allow myself to focus on my family, the better things are.

Quiet one, but productive

Published by SteveT under business,family,internet,tech

Really quiet weekend, almost entirely a strictly at home affair, which helped the bank balance, my health, and getting things done around the house.

Pretty poor weather as well, which has been a running theme all week, and since that’s been no good for my health, it was better to stay home as much as possible.

Worked on the office for the most part, taking the old desktop outside, trying to set up the graphics tablet on it, and generally getting things set up outside. Wireless reception is terrible (for the USB wireless at least), but I’m really liking the way it’s looking as an office outside. It’s what I’ve wanted for years really: an office separate from the house, with everything I want in terms of facilities, a good space, a big desk, all my gear. It feels professional, and it feels like I could do a lot of work there a lot of the time…

Which I hope to now, that’s for sure :)

Star Trek!

Published by SteveT under family,movies,review,writing

I wouldn’t call myself a Trekkie exactly, but at one stage I was quite a fan of all things Star Trek. Not constume wearing obsessive, but quite a fan. Read a lot of the books, watched most of the series, all the movies. So I’d been quite keen to see the new Star Trek movie, with a little insiders knowledge, but quite a few years now since my real Trek fan days.

Today was an actual day off, arranged a couple of weeks ago to make up for my extra work over the end of April for the new website at work. We had a baby medicine appointment for Sallie in the morning, an ultrasound just to check on everything. And it seemed all normal: he’s smaller than either Will or Alex were at the time, but everything looks good. Sallie still secretly hopes for a girl, looking at the lower weight and hoping… is unlikely though :)

After that we had a free day though. Good thing, since I still don’t feel brilliant, but not having to get out of the house at 8am helped a lot. After the doctors, we headed to Westpoint for a light lunch, then I finally picked up my NAS network storage unit that I’d wanted for a while (the last of the stimulus money!), then we got in just in time for the movie.

And a damn enjoyable movie it was too. After a hell of an action packed and emotionable opening scene, where everything is ramped up to 11 in intensity, we then got the leisurely introduction of all the new versions of the classic old Star Trek characters. And that was done remarkably well, with enough traits to find them familiar, but also new points that really gave them a smart updating. Things like Kirk’s wilder than usual streak, or Uhura’s genius smarts (not to mention her romance with Spock!) were unexpected, but made perfect sense. McCoy (Karl Urban) had all the best lines early, and while being new at the same time, he conveyed the classic essence of the character remarkably well.

Sallie had never been interested much in Star Trek before, but she was enjoying every moment of the movie. Her highlight came of course when Scotty (Simon Pegg) was introduced quite a distance into the story, and he got the best lines and scenes later on. There’s a lot of humour in Star Trek, and that didn’t get in the way, or overpower the serious story — it was a great help.

But of course, it’s primarily a story about Kirk and Spock. And they do that really well — Zach Quinto is remarkably like Nimoy, and Chris Pine, while not as much spitting image of Shatner, still conveys that cocky charm very successfully.

Very fun movie, good even for non-fans. I give it high marks.

Was it something I ate?

Published by SteveT under family,health

Woke up very early this morning and was sick… repeatedly. No idea why, but it could definiately have been something I ate yesterday, though I don’t really know what (and it all seemed fine at the time).

Don’t like to dwell on the detail, but must have dragged myself out of bed four or five times before morning with it, and it just felt awful. So naturally, by morning I was in no condition to do anything.

So I stayed home from work and slept… for nearly the entire day, in fact. Got up for an hour mid afternoon, then went back to bed, before finally getting up at 8pm and watching a few things, eating a very light toast meal, then heading back to bed a few hours later. When you can still get back to sleep after that, it’s easy to tell you needed the day off.

At least tomorrow is an actual scheduled day off…

From the diary of being a sports fan again…

Published by SteveT under family,review,sport,writing

Went to the football today, the first actual live game this year. Wests vs Souths at the SCG, an old school venue for the “Heritage Round”. Back in 1969, Souths played Balmain Tigers in the grand final, and the Tigers won that day, but it was not to be today.

Basically the main reason I went was that Wayne and I managed to score Members Stand tickets from a friend of Dad’s, which certainly made for an interesting experience. Tickets were unreserved, so we ended up right down near the front. An odd view since the field is really far from the fans at the SCG, but it was like being a kid again, really.

The game was a ridiculously up and down affair, with Wests taking early command, the squandering it for a 10-all half time score, then bursting away again in the second half to lead 22-10, then blowing that to have it go 22-22 in the last minuts, which would then get blown when somehow Souths scored a field goal in the last seconds to win 23-22. Hell of an exciting game really, but the result did not go my way.

The injury toll is looking bad for Wests, with Chris Lawrence, Dean Collis and Bryce Gibbs not even starting the game, and Keith Galloway going off injured within 10 minutes. So I wasn’t hopeful with that toll, really. Robbie Farah ran the show and set up most tries as always, but half way through the second half he got knocked unconscious in a fair tackle, and that’s really when Souths started coming back. Unless he’s injured, Farah is a certainty for State of Origin now, but I’m not looking forward to how Wests perform without him.

We hustled out of the ground and headed home really quickly after that sudden loss, skipping the chance to run on the field after, which is really an old-fashioned kids thing anyway. Oh well, can’t win them all, and I try not to let it worry me too much anyway.

Then again, the biggest difficulty would come early the next morning anyway… and it must have been something I ate…
