Watching and reading

Published by SteveT under books,television

Found myself watching a surprisingly large amount of TV stuff tonight, which seems common for Monday, but not really any other night. Watched Good News Week, Burn Notice (new episodes, but still season one apparently), Boston Legal and 30 Rock. With a large amount of Top Gear before that. And taping City Homicide and Mark loves Sharon as well. It’s all good stuff, but it’s a little odd to have it bunched together so heavily, and of course, it does make me wonder sometimes about my time useage…

But the upside I guess is watching far less outside of that. I’ll get other things done, though usually other things revolve around two small boys, which is fair enough. But there’s something I know I’m not doing of course… have to change priorities somewhere…

Got Charlie Stross’s new book today, far earlier than I thought. Saturn’s Children sounds great, but I’m so damn tired on the train so far it seemed kind of hard to get into. If I didn’t know better, I’d describe it as a grownup version of Wall-E (humans extinct, robots running their own affairs), but I’ve only read six pages :)

Sleep now, another cold day tomorrow no doubt…

Well this is late and cold

Published by SteveT under family

Apparently I’m going to work tomorrow … I mean, I don’t mind doing the work, but going there… that’s another story.

Had a nice lunch out today, took Will to Target, which he loves in this crazy and energetic way … helps that it’s Toy Sale time of course. Ended up with more Cars fingures, of course!

It’s cold … too cold … !

Late now, cold now … looking for more options in the morning.

Words and pictures

Published by SteveT under family

Alex might have said his first word today … it’s kind of hard to say, as it usually is.

The funny thing of course, is what I think I heard him say is exactly what we’ve joked for months that he would say first, because it’s what we always have to say to him…

“NO!”

He’s the boy who gets into everything, who’s always up to mischief, who’s always playing with what he shouldn’t be, so naturally we have to shake our heads and tell him no constantly. To be fair, I’m sure we’ve said “Alex!” more, but “NO!” comes out a lot.

And today at breakfast, Alex shakes his head at me, and says, as I’m trying to clean his face, “NO!”

NO!

(In the neverending health saga, we’re all a bit stuffed, but coping…)

Working from home is … great

Published by SteveT under family,rant,tech,television,writing

Well, it should be, anyway. Though still kind of sick — coughing awful anyway — I did get through some work. But naturally, nothing technical works how I’d really like it to. After all, the Windows PC is a joke, my Ubuntu laptop, while a lovely surprise, is now physically falling apart, slowing right down, and in desperate need of a full OSand browser upgrade. Not bad really considering I’ve got two years more use out of a machine that was heading for the recycler, but it’s near the end of its days now.

As much as I like working from home, I really need some more equipment. And even then, naturally the VPN wouldn’t work to the office, so I can’t access the network server. I mean, the VPN was fine, but nothing would map no matter what I tried. I think I’d like to get an eeePC 1000 now, no matter what I do professionally, but we’ll have to see.

Anyway, I got the newsletter done for work today, and not much else really beyond email — only need Net access for most of it, not the network. So it wasn’t a total loss, but with everyone else here sick too it was a hard one. Know I can do the setup a lot better, will have to see what I can do later.

Caught up on last week’s Dexter, the show I knew was brilliant a year and a half ago, but didn’t start watching until it got on free TV here (no point explaining how that happened), and watched some of Hot Fuzz on DVD again.

Hopefully better enough to do more on the weekend, and hope to hell the weather gets a little better if I have to brave the early morning trains next week…
